Sullivan’s grandfather, Samuel King, is a crotchety old fart, and when Sullivan inquires about an case of his from the early days of Sleuth Kings, he tells Sullivan to figure it out for himself if he thinks he’s such a hot shot investigator! Sullivan has sent the case file along to you to welcome you to the firm and get you acquainted with the way his cases work. Help Sullivan solve this case from the 50s, and prove that Samuel’s wrong about Sullivan’s (and your) detective skills!

First Impressions:

I received this case in a large envelope after subscribing to Sleuth Kings. Knowing that cases usually arrive in boxes, I was intrigued as to what this envelope could possibly be. When I opened it up and revealed that it included a bonus introductory case file, I was surprised and excited to receive such an in depth and detailed case on top of what I receive monthly with my subscription!

Best. Bonus. Ever.

High Points:

The fact that Sleuth Kings not only sends an extra case regarding the meta-narrative about Sullivan’s father’s disappearance every four solved cases, but also sends a bonus mini-case along just for subscribing, is amazing! I call it a mini-case, but really, it included a good hour’s worth of entertainment and flowed exceptionally well. This case really is a fantastic introduction to the Sleuth Kings universe and a fun surprise to tide subscribers over while they wait for their first box to arrive. Puzzles were simpler versions of the beefier code breaking and logical deduction found in full cases, but still presented a tricky riddle to work through. The props were excellent, and though they were part of a mini-case, care had obviously been taken to ensure they looked authentic and fit within the theme of a case from the 1950s! The insight into Sullivan’s personal relationship with his grandfather and Sleuth Kings was an excellent touch, and added to the overall immersion of the boxes themselves.

Low Points:

I can’t really say we came across any low points! This was a fantastic surprise and we enjoyed receiving an expertly crafted mini-case as an addition to our subscription!

Verdict:

As I’ve previously stated in reviews for Cases 006 and 007, Sleuth Kings is easily one of the best and most original subscription boxes out there! The fact that their bonus cases are of such high quality as well just adds to the already amazing value!
